Our Statement on Black Lives
Georgia Shift and Georgia Shift Action stand unapologetically with the families of those who have been murdered by police and white supremacist vigilantes. We condemn the deliberately designed 400 year old system of racism that allows the people who committed these murders to escape justice.
We stand with all of the young people fighting to dismantle this system that terrorizes them day in and day out.
Black lives should not only matter, but they should be protected, celebrated and compensated equally for the contributions that have been made to this country and the world.
Rather than ending our response with this statement, here’s what we plan to do in the short term and long term:
In the short term:
- We will work with organizers to support their local actions in Augusta and the surrounding area. We will be supplying them with PPE and supplies and other needs as we can as actions continue into the summer.
- We will provide support for staff during this time to participate, grieve, and heal as they choose.
In the long term, we’ll:
- Hold space for local organizers and the community together to collectively define an agenda with policy demands now and for 2021, and provide resources for them to do that.
- Continue to not only say Black Lives Matter, but uplift black voices and fight against the injustices black people face every day
This will only be the start, because as we hear more from the community about their needs, we’ll adjust to the best way to support them.
In the coming weeks and months, we look forward to working with our partners and the community to make sure that happens.
