πŸ™Œ Meet Maria Del Rosario Palacios, our Advocacy & Policy Director!

  • What inspired you to get involved in civic engagement?
I was first inspired to get involved in civic engagement when I was five years old and we did a mock election at our elementary school. We voted between President Bush and Al Gore. I learned about CSPAN early in high school and would watch it regularly. Civic engagement became a passion for me in my undergraduate degree when I started volunteering for GALEO and I haven’t taken any breaks since.
  • If you could meet any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
If I could meet any historical figure I would love to sit down and have dinner with Marguerite Annie Johnson, more known as Maya Angelou. Marguerite pours strength into everyone who reads her words. Not only did she rise from very difficult circumstances but she turned them into a beautiful career. I would love to discuss in detail her life journey.
  • How do you recharge?
I recharge by reading in my home. I grew up in a home with constant variables like homelessness, poverty, an undocumented status, and language barriers for my single mother of five. Things were always noisy and hectic but I could always find refuge in a book. Now, as someone who heads my own home I have made my place a sanctuary where electronics don’t live in every room. I find a variety of different books to read most nights and some days, as my recharge.
  • What are three things still left on your bucket list?
Three things still left on my bucket list are to learn Vietnamese, to learn how to code, and to learn how to swim.
  • If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
If I could have any superpower it would be able to speak all languages in this world. I would use that superpower to travel and hear the narratives of our fellow Earth walkers. I would spend my entire day listening to the untold stories of our humanity.
